Citrus is characterized by a leathery rind and white pith that encases juicy segments. Lemons, limes, grapefruit, and oranges are included in the citrus types of fruits. Lucky for us who live in Australia since it is the native of citrus besides New Guinea, New Caledonia, and Southeast Asia (Jennings, 2017).
Citrus fruits have a bunch of health benefit, therefore you should start adding citrus to your meal plan. These are the benefit of having citrus as your daily fruits.
1. Strengthen the Immune System
Did you know that one medium orange has all the vitamin C you? Yes, citrus fruits are an excellent source of Vitamin C. This is the reason it can strengthen your immune system and even keeps your skin smooth and elastic.
2. Improving Digestive Health
Other than vitamin C, citrus also a good source of fiber. One cup of oranges contains four grams of fiber. This fiber could improving digestive health, aiding weight loss, and help to lower cholesterol. Compared to other fruit and vegetables, citrus have a higher ratio of soluble to insoluble fiber.
3. Reducing Kidney Stone Risk
When your urine is very concentrated or have higher-than-normal amounts of stone-forming minerals in your urine, they can form it into painful mineral crystals. Citrus fruits can raise the levels of citrate in your urine to lowering the risk of kidney stones.
4. Protect Against Cancer
Citrus contain a host of plant compounds, including flavonoids, that may help protects against cancer. These flavonoids may block the expression of certain genes that are responsible for some degenerative diseases, including cancer.
5. Protect Your brain
Other than protects against cancer, the flavonoids also may help ward of neurodegenerative disease, such as alzheimer’s and parkinson’s, which result from the breakdown of cells in the nervous system. The flavonoids have anti-inflammatory capabilities that are help protects against the chain of events that causes the nervous system to deteriorate.
Overall, Citrus fruit are healthy, low calories, and convenience to eat. Many benefit that have been mentioned for you to eat citrus fruit. So, don’t forget to eat citrus, and be healthy!
